The Town of Fort Kent Fire Department (FKFD) is a totally volunteer fire department located on the northern border of the United States and Canada.  Fort Kent is the service community for the region and the fire department supplies services regionally to the adjoining communities of St. John Plantation, Wallagrass, and New Canada which have no fire departments.  The FKFD currently has 30 members.

The Fort Kent Fire Department provides a full range of emergency services including structural fire fighting, hazardous materials protection and mitigation, rescue services, and fire education.  The Fort Kent Fire Department response area consists of 6600 residents in a rural setting of approximately 184 square miles.  Fort Kent is the home to the University of Maine at Fort Kent, a branch of the University of Maine system which has several large structures including student housing.  The Northern Maine Medical center in Fort Kent is a 49-bed hospital, which also encompasses Forest Hill Rehab & Skilled Nursing Center, a 45-bed skilled nursing and rehab facility.  There is a rail line passing through the center of the town which has HAZMAT potential.  There are two large bulk petroleum storage areas and one propane bulk storage and cylinder storage depot.  Other significant structures are several multi-story apartments, a motel, and a downtown business area with closely spaced wooden stores, restaurants, and service stations.  Many of our calls involve highway emergencies consisting of traffic crashes, fires, and HAZMAT potential CBRNE exposure risks.

The FKFD maintains a clear and manageable organizational structure lead by a Fire Chief with a full NIMS compliant organizational structure including an NFPA 1521 Health & Safety Officer dedicated to NFPA 1500 standard of firefighter health & safety practices. The FKFD recognizes and practices other widely accepted regulatory and national standards within the Fire Service. The FKFD manages its own local training with assistance from Maine Fire Training and Education. The FKFD have an active ongoing recruitment and retention program. Firefighters are recruited and trained locally.  The FKFD also offer continuing education in the fire service through Maine Fire Training and Education which offers a full range of certifications from Firefighter I and II NFPA 2001 through fire officer programs.   The overall priority in 2012 for the FKFD is to continue to recruit, train and retain new and existing members. In doing so we are struggling to properly outfit these new members with compliant personal protective equipment.
